When looking to buy wholesale VoIP there are many factors to consider. Many companies first consideration is the cost of the minutes themselves as this is a good gauge to determine the size of the provider you are dealing with. Other things to consider are the backbone network of the provider, the support they provide, the channel limitations, the quality of the voice, call set up time, latency, and even hidden fees.

One type of VoIP provider would be a Tier 1 carrier such as AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, ect. Tier 1 VoIP providers typically have their own network of hard copper lines spanning a certain area terminating to the end user. They also often will peer directly with other Tier 1 providers to increase their footprint. This allows for the highest quality of voice and reliability. Tier 1 providers usually have large volume requirements to send traffic over their wholesale VoIP network. Their pricing usually ranges with the potential customers traffic type and volume.

Another type of VoIP provider would be a Tier 2 carrier such as XO, Time Warner, IDT Corp., ect. Tier 2 VoIP providers typically are interconnected with one or more Tier 1 VoIP providers. Tier 2 providers can even have their own local network that reaches to their end users. The quality of service provided by a Tier 2 provider is often comparable to that of a Tier 1 provider. Tier 2 providers mostly focus on servicing small to medium sized businesses (100 – 999 employees) and typically do not have volume requirements to access their network. Depending on volume Tier 2 providers will openly negotiate and cater rates to the customer’s requirements.

What is NPA-NXX billing?

Before we answer the question at hand, let’s cover what NPA-NXX means.

Breaking down NPA-NXX

When looking at a telephone number from the USA, you will have 10 digits listed as so NPA-NXX-XXXX.

NPA identifies the first 3 digits as the Numbering Plan Area (area code).

NXX identifies the next 3 digits in a phone number known as the Exchange.

XXXX identifies the last 4 digits in a phone number.

NPA-NXX billing

There are over 180,000 combinations of NPA-NXX within the USA and Canada. When looking at an NPA-NXX rate deck, there is usually a column with the header NPA-NXX. This column shows each combination of NPA-NXX. Here’s an example: 201-200the NPA would be 201 (New Jersey) and the NXX would be 200. Each combination of NPA-NXX has a different per minute rate to terminate calls. Back to our 201-200 example, if you look at the column next to the NPA-NXX, the per minute rate is mentioned. The per minute rate for each NPA-NXX combination mostly depends on your vendor, your traffic type, and your volume.

How NPA-NXX billing saves money

NPA-NXX billing saves you money on VoIP termination in many ways. When looking at an NPA-NXX rate deck, sort the pricing column from smallest to largest. Many of the rates for NPA-NXX combinations start at $0.0005/minute. Scrolling down and looking at the rate column, you will see the minute rate increase. A rule of thumb is that the cheaper rates are going to be your most populated areas and your most expensive rates are you rural areas that are not as populated. With most calls directed to higher populated areas, competition is fierce. That drives the per minute rate down to fractions of a penny per minute.

Some VoIP Termination providers will offer a flat per minute rate that covers all or limited codes. For example, a flat $.0073/minute rate could cover all codes in the USA and Canada. But if you go back to the NPA-NXX rates, 50% or more of the NPA-NXX combinations are less expensive than $.0073/min. Most companies who use NPA-NXX are going to average much less than $.0073/minute and it’s easy to see why.

What does BYOV mean? And how can it help save your company money?

BYOV represents an abbreviation of Bring Your Own VoIP.

BYOV is related to VoIP telephony technology such as SIP Trunks, DID numbers, and T.38 faxing. Typically companies who offer cloud based telephony services have an option for you to BYOV. These types of providers range from Hosted PBX providers, Soft Switch providers, CRM providers, Hosted Predictive Dialer providers, and more.

It’s important to compare costs when looking towards using a cloud based telephony service.  Some service providers offer VoIP included in their pricing where others have a BYOV option.  Using a BYOV cloud based provider allows you to have an advantage and find the most reliable and least cost VoIP solution for your company.  In most cases, using a cloud based service and combining it with BYOV you will see significant savings.

It’s easy to compare the cost difference between a BYOV service provider vs an all inclusive.  For a BYOV service provider, start by looking at your average monthly minute usage.  Then calculate the per minute rates from a wholesale VoIP provider.  Also factor in the cost of the cloud service provider’s platform.  Once you have this together you’ll have a good approximation of the monthly costs.  To compare with a company that offers VoIP included, simply look at the cost per month.  Make sure to find out if their offer includes unlimited VoIP or if there is a limit.  Then it’s as easy as comparing apples to apples.
